Practitioner Inquiry into the Urban Education Elective

What happens when a teacher strives to create a high school class that investigates issues of school and society, in a way that provides students with a chance not just to understand, but also to connect, to apply, to investigate, and to speak out?  Explorations of this ongoing investigation are included here.

Ethnography Forum Presentation: "Critical Co-investigation with the Ultimate Stakeholders: A Practitioner Inquiry into the Urban Education Elective at University City High School" (3.1.2014)

Prezi presentation shared by the Urban Ed teacher, A.J. Schiera, along with five University City High School students, at Practitioner Inquiry Day at the Univesrity of Pennsylvania's Ethnography in Education forum.  This practitioner inquiry tackled two broad questions:
  • As a practitioner in creating such a setting, what was the vision for the course?  How did it develop and evolve, and what influenced those changes?  What outcomes and experiences were most meaningful to students?
  • How can engaging students in the study of their own urban schooling context create pedagogies of the possible for students, teachers, and their schools and school districts?  How can multiple modalities shared with various audiences help students, the ultimate stakeholders in schools, make their voices heard?

Use the left and right arrows to navigate through the Prezi.
